Something Magical

Something Magical

Last week we conducted the New Light ‘UT/ILP Investing Sales Master Class’ for eleven advisors from Ellain Tan’s team representing Phillip Securities. The class was conducted face to face at Phillip Securities Raffles City Office.

The week was a hectic one. Three classes were being conducted in a day. By the time I would reach the Phillip Securities office it would already be late afternoon. On most days I would have already spent five hours delivering sales coaching over Zoom. Magical things happened at that office which kept me engergised when I should have been dog tired. Eric Lee made a big splash during role play. He created an analogy where he likened short-term investing (1-3 years) to riding a water slide in a water park. In his words “it is exciting at first, but too tiring and stressful to climb the stairs for the 10 seconds of thrill.

Long-term investing, on the other hand, is like jumping into the lazy river. We need only to put in the initial work of getting onto the float. After that, we can sit back, enjoy the ride and let river flow carry us through”.

Jeremy Tan explained how in pear farming results are not usually seen in three to five years. Relationship managers at banks often suggest 3-5 year investment horizon for equity unit trust while our evidence based approach suggests a long period of around 10 years. Jeremy was drawing attention to this and suggesting a longer investment period.

I saw for myself how the teams Director, Ellain Tan took care of every attendees learning needs and how she encouraged participation. Witnessing the enthusiastic and insightful participation of financial advisors from Phillip Securities and the caring nature of their Director was a magical experience for me.
